Scarecrow is a 1973 American road movie directed by Jerry Schatzberg, and starring Gene Hackman and Al Pacino. The story revolves around the relationship between two men who travel from California, aiming to start a business in Pittsburgh.

Max (Gene Hackman) is an ex-con who's been saving money to open a car wash in Pittsburgh. Lionel (Al Pacion) is a sailor who's returning home to the midwest to see the child born while he was at sea. They form an unlikely pair as the brawling Max learns a little how Lionel copes with the world: the story revolves around the relationship between two men who travel from California to Pittsburgh.

Contrary to rumours that this is a second-string American new wave movie, this Pacino-Hackman double-hander is a freewheeling masterpiece, with both actors giving the performances of their lives.

At the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, it tied for the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film, the highest honour.
