Nineteen year-old Franco-Arab Malik El Djebena is sentenced to six years for a crime he says he did not commit. Caught between feuding prison gangs of Corsicans and Muslims, he is offered protection by Corsican mafioso César Luciani, but at a price. Tahar Rahim is a revelation as Malik, in a completely absorbing and brilliantly understated performance; from a fearful, naïve, illiterate boy rising through the ranks to become an astute, self-assured and powerful man. Beautifully paced and sensitively shot this is a prison drama unlike any other. “The brilliant screenplay wisely refuses to judge Malik; it simply presents the options and parameters that have been given to him by fate, society, nature - and watches as he manoeuvres through, in and around them in order to survive.” Winner of the BAFTA Best Foreign Language Film award, Cannes Grand Jury Prize, 11 César awards and a further 47 international film awards, A Prophet is one of the most affecting Crime Dramas in recent times and one of director Jacques Audiard’s finest films.
