Sarah Polley's excellent Canadian movie stars Julie Christie as Fiona (Oscar nominated), an Alzheimer's patient in a retirement home who, to her husband's dismay, begins a platonic love affair with a male patient. It is an affecting and thought-provoking meditation on the nature of dementia and memory itself, as the audience is invited to wonder whether Fiona in some sense welcomes memory-loss as blissful freedom from painful memories; it also asks if she has effectively become a different person, and if Alzheimer's has utterly dissolved the responsibilities contingent on her old identity. An outstanding film.
