The prospect of spending 100 minutes in the company of a Norwegian male voice choir may not sound that inviting, but Knut Erik Jensen's documentary portrait of the Berleväg choristers is a delight. The members of the choir reside in a remote fishing town that's been badly hit by recession, and their music and cheerful camaraderie play an important part in sustaining morale. Whether depicting the choir rehearsing outdoors in the face of a blizzard or excitedly making their way to the Russian city of Murmansk for a recital, the film conveys the warmth of community that insulates these gloriously eccentric characters from their icy surroundings. Irrepressible and enthusiastic, each chorister has a story to tell and their testimony is invariably moving, amusing or astute. A little gem.
