John Sayles's directing debut was shot for a mere $60,000 and deals with the reunion of seven friends, all of whom were part of the student protest movement of the 1960s and are now definitely older, richer and perhaps wiser. There's a teacher, a singer, a doctor and so on, and they talk, attend a play, talk some more, have sex, get arrested and go their separate ways. It has the density of a novel and the non-starry cast is simply marvellous, each member creating a real character, yet none making too big a show of it. This is a real ensemble piece that is often regarded as superior to the very similar, big-budgeted and starry Lawrence Kasdan film The Big Chill.
