Contrasting the innocent expectancy of youth with the bitter regret of old age, this is Ingmar Bergman's warmest and most accessible film. Sweden's greatest silent director, Victor Sjöström, gives a magisterial performance as the frosty, vain professor who seizes the chance for redemption offered to him in the dreams and nightmares that he experiences while travelling to a degree ceremony with his daughter-in-law, Ingrid Thulin. The symbolism of the nightmares (including handless clocks and runaway hearses) is occasionally overpowering, but the memories of idyllic summers spent with cousin Bibi Andersson rank among the finest moments of a career studded with highlights.
