Anger and sadness lie at the heart of this treatise on the perpetuation of the patriarchal prejudices underpinning Turkish society. The film was written by Yilmaz Güney, while in prison for so-called political offences, and directed from explicit instructions by his longtime assistant, Serif Gören. The negative was then smuggled to Switzerland, where Güney edited it following his escape. The winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, it testifies to the courage of Turkey's greatest-ever film-maker. But, perhaps more significantly, the story of the five parolees who must face up to personal calamity also highlights the tragedy of a nation whose future is so hidebound by its past.
