Two professional killers invade a small town and kill a gas station attendant, "the Swede," (played by the incomparable Burt Lancaster in his debut film) who's expecting them. Insurance investigator Reardon (Edmond O’Brien - a terrific actor) pursues the case against the orders of his boss, who considers it trivial. Weaving together threads of the Swede's life, Reardon uncovers a complex tale of treachery and crime, all linked with gorgeous, mysterious Kitty Collins (Ava Gardner).

For Trivia fans, this was William Conrad's first credited role as one of the killers and who would also go onto star as the Heavweight Detective 'Cannon' in the long running TV series of the same name in the seventies !

The same basic plot as the 1944 film, this time looking at the story from the viewpoint of the ageing hitman Charlie Strom (a terrific Lee Marvin), who's eager to know why their victim (John Cassavetes) didn't attempt to escape, and his psychopathic, hero-worshiping assistant (Clu Gulager). They're an unsympathetic pair, but utterly compelling in their ruthlessness. The movie defines the violent, complex persona that would make Marvin a star, and he's cast alongside the irresistibly alluring Angie Dickinson in the femme fatale role. Directed by Don Siegel, who directed 5 films with Clint Eastwood including the iconic Dirty Harry.
